Barnsley

Barnsley is a market town located in South Yorkshire, England. In comparison to the larger borough, which had a population of 246,866, the town of Barnsley had a population of 91,297 as of the 2011 Census, making it the fourth largest community in South Yorkshire. It is situated between the cities of Sheffield, Manchester, Wakefield, and Leeds and was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Nearby are the bigger towns of Rotherham, Huddersfield, and Doncaster.

Former industries in Barnsley include textiles, glassmaking, coal mining, and linen. However, Barnsley's culture is founded in its industrial past and has a tradition of brass bands, which were initially formed as social clubs by its mining communities. These organisations went out of business in the 20th century.
